WHAT IS PMS?
The term PMS covers a range of physical and emotional symptoms experienced by women during part of the menstrual cycle - 2-14 days before a period starts.Definition of pms. This is perfectly normal and there are some women who notice nothing at all. But for a large majority "that time of the month" can mean having to endure one or more of the following symptoms: headache, breast tenderness/swelling, weight gain and fluid retention. Cravings for salty or sweet food are also common.
The emotional and personality changes can be profound. A woman may become short-tempered and strike out verbally and physically at her family. She may make wrong decisions at work and may have to have time off. If her periods are very painful and she dreads them, her PMS will also be worse.
Many women find that with every cycle they experience different symptoms, or that the intensity of the symptoms varies from cycle to cycle.
If you suffer from PMS you are not neurotic, a hypochondriac or a malingerer (as some old-fashioned medical books have claimed!!). It is also clearly not "all in your mind".
The term PMT (premenstrual tension) usually refers just to emotional changes.
RELIEF FROM SYMPTOMS
Remedies for PMS vary greatly because there are so many symptoms involved. It is not a recognised disease with a proven treatment, however, many women do find relief from various sources.
Treatment should involve first of all, a good talk with your doctor. Looking at your lifestyle carefully. This includes your diet, work and daily demands. Hormones are quite markedly influenced by these aspects of life. Changing hormone levels can help. Taking the contraceptive pill or H.R.T. (Hormone Replacement Therapy) may be appropriate.
Many women find it helpful to take Evening Primrose Oil and Vitamin B6. Complementary (alternative ) therapies like acupuncture, herbalism or homeopathy may be helpful.
Techniques such as yoga and meditation can also improve symptoms.
HELP AND SUPPORT
Many women find that the support they get from friends, family and fellow sufferers is crucial. If possible, join or start a support group where you can talk about the ways you are affected by your menstrual cycle and compare remedies for PMS.
